A NUMBER of shops in Harare’s Commercial Business District, (CBD) have withdrawn goods from shelves and stopped selling their merchandise until after this weekend's presidential and parliamentary elections.
The move, which has brought back empty shelves in Zimbabwe’s retail outlets in the capital, came after President Robert Mugabe threatened another price blitz ─ warning that his government would 'read the riot act' to price hikers. Long queues have again resurfaced in most shops as consumers grab the few remaining good s on shelves. OK Supermarket at the corner of Rezende Street and Jason Moyo Avenue in Harare has been emptied after management removed goods from shelves and took them to an unidentified warehouse. Meanwhile, the National Incomes Pricing Commission (NIPC) has warned that it will intervene to stop shops from closing down and order them to bring back goods on the shelves. NIPC chairman, Godwills Masimirembwa, said corrective measures would be taken and that all those shops closing down will be asked to explain.
“We will be asking those who are refusing to open shop or to sell goods why they are doing so,” said Masimirembwa.
