Tsvangirai returns home to contest runoff election

Tsvangirai returns home to contest runoff election

THE leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) party will return home in the next two days to contest a runoff according to a statement he issued Saturday.

Morgan Tsvangirai—who still claims that he won the presidential election resoundingly to avoid a run off election—ended weeks of speculation by making this announcement.

Tsvangirai’s MDC-T party had earlier indicated that they will never contest a runoff election.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said none of the presidential candidates garnered the required result to avoid a runoff election. According to ZEC, Tsvangirai scored 47.9 per cent of the vote, and President Robert Mugabe scored 43.2 per cent—both figures below the 50 plus one per cent threshold required to declare ourigh victory.

These official results were echoed by the ruling Zanu PF party and independent candidate Simba Makoni, but the MDC-T flatly rejected them.

“The MDC has decided that we will contest the runoff and the people will finally prevail. The people have spoken before, and the people will speak again. I am ready and the people are ready for the final round,” said Tsvangirai in a statement.

Tsvangirai said this decision was reached at after consultation with members of the civil society and the leadership of the MDC-T party.

“I have asked the MDC, civil society and other democratic forces to assess the feeling of the people on the ground,” said Tsvangirai.

“The overwhelming sentiment that emerged from the people of Zimbabwe is that they are ready,” he continued.

Tsvangirai said he will return home to begin a ‘Victory Tour’. He has been in self-imposed exile in Botswana where he was a guest of the new Botswana president, Ian Khama.

Tsvangirai did not indicate whether party secretary general Tendai Biti—whom police want to interview on allegations of incitement of violence and violation of electoral law—will also be returning home. Biti is believed to be resident in South Africa.

President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF party has indicated that it is ready for a runoff election.

The leadership of the party has already endorsed President Mugabe for a runoff vote.

Earlier this month the Zanu PF administration secretary, Didymus Mutasa, said the party had endorsed a runoff if necessary.

The ZEC is yet to announce the date of the runoff election.

• Name calling has always been MDCs trump card. They think it is right for them to tell people to shut up.They think they are so powerful and above everything and everyone else. That is the mentality of bullies and stooges. They need to know that they will not walk this journey without encountering the very thorns that ZanuPF experienced during the armed struggle. The authorities should read the riot act to the leaders of MDC because they alone are responsible for the wanton behaviour displayed by their supporters, themselves and their apologists. We are fed up by people whose language knows no value to the tenets of nationhood.Zimbabwe is a country cursed by poor memories and a lack of self identity. It is unacceptable for future leaders to grovel about someone's age as an issue in politics. There are principles which never look at age as an issue especially in politics.Mugabe is probably the sharpest politician alive in both intellect and principle.

• We do not dismiss the ruling party. If they feel foreigners are intruding in our affairs, let them articulate and campaign peacefully to people. Let violent tactics be discarded. If they feel MDC are sellouts sponsored to recolonise Zimbabwe, let them show all evidence in public. Food for thought.

• Your comments are one of a person determined to stop the opposition by all means. What do you mean every tactic to their disposal. Does that mean violence and stuff. Aren't they accountable to people also and if they fail to do work shouldn't the people be allowed to choose a leader of their choice. Your call is therefore not necessary at this particular moment in time. And did you know the liberation struggle was sponsored by China and Russia. Did the people complain? Do you expect worn-out peasants to sponsor an opposition considering that the ruling elite have a monopoly on the resources. I am not an MDC, but the government should just outline their policies rather than consider themselves as the only ones who have the right to govern. You say Tsvangirai must not be given free movement, Isn't he a Zimbabwean who has every right to articulate his policies. Icho!

• We are heading for a bruising contest. This time the ruling party must use whatever tactics they have at their disposal to stop the MDC.It will be unforgivable to allow a party sponsored by colonialists and liars to govern us.It will be a travesty of justice to those that fought for our freedom. It will be unforgivable to allow Tsvangirai free movement in a country he wants ruined because of his desire for money and power. If he gets back to Zimbabwe, the right place for him is A MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON.Mutengesi mukuru baba ava.Mhosva dzavo ndedzekunyepera kuda vanhu ivo vachichapfanya mari yavanopiwa nevarungu kuti vatengese nyika.Mapenzi anozviti akadzidza ndivo vamwe.Basa rokumhanya nyika dzose vachinyepa zvino nyika yava papi?Kusaziva kufa nokuti hapana akanaka kudarika wekwako.

• Tsvangirayi - you need to make up your mind and stop issuing a multitude of conflicting statements. Initially, you said you were not going to contest the elections unless international (i.e not only regional) observers were allowed into the country. You knew very well that Robert would not allow this to happen. And then you changed your stance and participated, claiming that you had consulted the people.

After the run-off, you ranted on and on about boycotting the run-off, making your previous demands (which you knew would never be met). And then finally you said you had made up your mind about partipciating but you would not disclose your decision until ZEC announced a run-off date. Well, ZEC are yet to announce any date for a run-off but you have already reneged on your own threat, claiming once again that the people want you to participate.

My question is: When you issue all these vacuous boycott threats for weeks and weeks, do you consult the same people and issue the threats under their direction? Or is it you who is just clueless?

Mr Tsvangirai, people need to be led. They need a leader who is decisive and resolute. Your fickleness is counter-productive on the political field. The problem is that you have surrounded yourself with individuals (Chamisa and Biti in particular) who are equally clueless. Get some true intellectuals (not mere rabble rousers) into your camp and formulate a coherent party policy. That way you will avoid making a fool of yourself. Ukatonga uchaona ana UK vako ivavo vave kushandisa your present gaffes against you.
