ZCTU leaders denied bail

Tue, 13 May 2008 00:36:00 +0000

TWO Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions leaders who were arrested last week for making speeches at a workers' day rally have been denied bail when they appeared in court on Monday, ZCTU said in a statement.

ZCTU president Lovemore Matombo and secretary general Wellington Chibebe were remanded to May 23.

ZCTU acting information officer Last Tarabuku said the presiding magistrate said the two men were not eligible for bail and had to remain in custody in the interest of justice.

Tarabuku said ZCTU's lawyer Aleck Muchadehama was lodging an appeal with the High Court.

Matombo and Chibebe were arrested on Thursday after handing themselves over. The men were charged for "inciting people to rise against government".

The allegations arise from comments which the two made at this year's May Day celebrations at the Dzivaresekwa stadium.

Tarabuku said the state prosecutor told the court that the two men would abscond if they were given bail.

The men are being held at Harare remand prison where they are being subjected to "intensive interrogation", police in Harare confirmed on Friday
