Tsvangirai pull-out was ill-informed and untimely — Moyo

Thu, 26 Jun 2008 16:09:00 +0000

INDEPENDENT House of Assembly Member of Parliament elect for Tsholotsho North constituency and former Minister of Information, Professor Jonathan Moyo said the decision by Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai to pull out of tomorrow’s presidential run-off election is ill informed and untimely.

Addressing the Bulawayo Press Club, Moyo said the reasons Tsvangirai cited for the withdrawal was not justified.

“Tsvangirai said the reason for his withdrawal was that the violence in Zimbabwe today is the worst since 1980 which is not true.

“We all know that about 20 000 people died during the Gukurahundi era in 1985, but elections were still held in July 1985. Morgan is saying 86 people have been killed in the violence during the build-up to the presidential run-off,” said Moyo.

Moyo said there is no legal basis for Tsvangirai to withdraw from the race and the election will go on as announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

He said Tsvangirai had not consolidated his near-win of March 29, but instead wasted time globe-trotting appealing to world leaders instead of campaigning for the second round.

On the other hand, Zanu PF regrouped and agreed to bury its differences while they concentrated on campaigning for President Mugabe in the run-off elections.

Moyo said after winning the run-off tomorrow Mugabe would form a Government of National Unity which will include opposition members and was not likely to include Tsvangirai in his cabinet.

“Tsvangirai has demonstrated that he has made many blunders, the latest being seeking refuge in the Dutch embassy.

“The Zimbabwean problem is an African problem and if he genuinely felt his life was under threat he should have sought refuge in one of the African embassies so that a brother would talk to a brother about the problem,” said Moyo.

On Wednesday the MDC-T withdraw from the presidential run off citing the current political violence.

• to be honesty iam fade up of hearing jonathan moyo's comments.jonathan himself was a spin doctor for mugabe's regime now that he fell out with the regime and was ushered the exit by the party he comes up with such negative comments.lets not compare the atrocities of the gukura hundi with whats happening now.if we are to compare numbers then the whole issue then loses meaning.to kill someone is morally wrong,so if jonathan can explain to me why it was alright for zanu pf to campaign and then mdc was unable to carry their campaign process.the mdc did not overnight decied to withdraw from the presedential election over night but it was after thoroughly assessing what was on the ground.so jonathan please at times some of your comments i find them retrogressive and zanu pf inclined.save us from those comments you are part of the regime that has caused zimbabwe to be where it is now.dont forget you are the one who destroyed all the pathways to freedom of speech through imposing very oppresive regulations to the multimedia in zimbabwe.you have blood on your hands jonzo.

• If Tsvangirai has so many friends, how come he can't win an election? The truth of the fact is that the only friends, if you want to call it that, Tsvangirai has are Bush, Brown, and the other characters in the west. The traitor Tsvangirai can't win the election because he does not have the support of the Zimbabwe people, and because he withdraw from the election, the two reasons are not mutually exclusive of each other.

• Its all very well for people like Jonathan Moyo to criticise Tsvangirai for pulling out, but we find ourselves in this mess partly because of people like Jonathan Moyo himself, who in my opinion should shoulder much of the blame. I will come back to that later, but first of all people should not just rush to criticise when they don't have anything better to offer. As far as I'm concerned every Zimbabwean citizen can and is entitled to do something to change the leadership, either by way of voting the leadership out or contesting as a presidential candidate themselves. Now why should we criticise someone who has managed to stand up and achieve so much when we haven't done anything ourselves. As far as I can remember I have not heard of Moyo ever being jailed, beaten up or tortured by Zanu Pf. People may want to blame Tsvangirayi but they should bear on mind when he agreed to participate in this run-off the violence had not actually started, and even then, he clearly said it was with a heavy heart they decided to do that. As such he is entitled to change his mind depending on the circumstances he and his people find themselves in. We all know Zanu had done everything to rig this election, and what recourse would Tsvangirayi had if he had taken part in such an election and 'lost'? The previous 3 or 4 elections were stolen the same way and the matters brought before the courts and nothing happened. I dont want to go on listing things that had been put in place here to ensure a Zanu Pf 'victory', but to think any other result would have come out of this is wishful thinking. Everyone in Harare right now wears a Zanu Pf t-shirt, not by choice. Secondly, why dont they point out this run-off is illegal? The constitution says such an exercise should take place 21 days after the announcement of results, which clearly is not the case here. How can someone in their normal senses blame anyone for not taking part in an illegal exercise. In my mind there is no doubt Tsvangirayi knew even if he had won, the results would have been reversed. The bottom line is there should never have been this run-off, as Tsvangirayi clearly won the first time out. Its people like Moyo who made sure freedom of expression died in Zimbabwe, the same tools that Mugabe is using to stay in power. Why doesn't Moyo himself take on Mugabe to undo the damage he caused. And may I also add that had Makoni not decided to 'challenge' mugabe there would have been no need for a run-off, so people like that (who have been more of a hindrance than aid to our emancipation) should think before they open their mouths. Tsvangirayi has been arrested several times, and yet people like Makoni & Moyo go on about their daily business and have the nerve to criticise him when they have clearly aided mugabe to stay in power. I feel only people who have been given the same treatment as Tsvangirayi, Biti, etc should be the ones to level any criticism, not someone who doesn't know how it feels to spend a night in police cells in Zimbabwe. And Moyo is insulting people when he tries to compare number of deaths with Gukurahundi. Are we to say if less than 20000 people die then thats not an issue? Also with the violence continuing who knows what the final tally would be? And I am sure when people say its the worst kind of violence they are talking about how widespread it is, and the number of victims in the time its been waged. This latest violence has genocidal tendencies as it has the potential to flare up all over and consume the whole country in one move. Had an oppostion party won the 1985 election then he may have had a point. Its not far-fetched to suggest had mugabe not committed those attrocities early on he would have been voted out way back. Its only through use of violence, vote-rigging & intimidation that he's managed to hang on. Elections have been used for nearly three decades now with the same result, what would make us think things would cahnge now. So to conclude I think the path taken by Tsvangirayi will see things change as for the first time post-independence we may actually have UN monitors, or have a different, credible election to the 5 or 6 previous ones that had only one result.
