THE Zimbabwean permanent ambassador to the United Nations has said that a resolution by the UN Security Council to impose further sanctions on Zimbabwe is likely to hit a brickwall as the current problems in the country were not a threat to regional and international peace.
He also added that Zimbabwe had complied with its Constitution in carrying out the presidential run-off election.
“Zimbabwe complied with its Constitution during the recent election period and no one has the right to reverse that.
"We have been lobbying members of the Security Council telling them that Zimbabwe is not a threat to regional or international peace and stability and therefore should not be a Council issue," Chidyausiku said.
He added that the U.S. and Britain were trying to use the offices of the U.N. to justify regime change in Zimbabwe.
"We are not a threat to anyone, but the West is waging a war of attrition and they want to use the offices of the UN to effect regime change," Ambassador Chidyausiku said.
He added that there were confirmed allies within the U.N. SC notably permanent members China and Russia who could veto a decision to sanction Zimbabwe.
Other members of the SC without veto power include South Africa, Libya, Indonesia and Vietnam, the current president of the powerful organ.
