President Mugabe inspects a guard of honour

TALKS aimed at resolving the political impasse and economic crisis in the country have resumed at a Harare hotel this afternoon after President Robert Mugabe gave a speech commemorating Heroes' Day.

President Mugabe was seen entering the Rainbow Towers Hotel in Harare together with General Constantine Chiwenga, head of Zimbabwe’s armed forces.

Together with the leaders of the formations of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change parties, Morgan Tsvangirai and Professor Arthur Mutambara are now on the 16th floor of the Rainbow Towers Hotel in talks being mediated by President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa.

Negotiations started about 2 p.m. local time after a 12-hour break.

Yesterday’s talks lasted for almost 14 hours.

Tsvangirai, head of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has not commented since the last negotiating session ended, referring questions to Mbeki.

HEROES’ DAY SPEECH

Earlier today, President Mugabe, spoke at a National Heroes’ Day commemoration, honouring fighters who died in the country’s war of liberation against white minority rule.

He called on Britain and her allies to withdraw the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe so that the country can chart a way forward as a people.

He said the development of Zimbabwe should be preceded by an understanding that Zimbabwe’s legacy is ours and we should all protect it regardless of political affiliations.

He added that all Zimbabweans should never betray the aspirations, principles and values which the liberation war heroes fought and died for.
