MORE space is need for the enlarged House of Assembly which now has 303 members according to a Zimbabwe Clerk of Parliament.
Harare Clerk of Parliament, Austin Zvoma said, although preparations for the swearing in of parliamentarians were at an advanced stage, there were still concerns over the inadequate space in the extended House of Assembly.
Zvoma said the HA chamber is too small to accommodate the increased number of 303 legislators, but said the senate chamber has adequate space for all the 93 members of the Upper House and could accommodate even up to 97 senators.
According to reports Tuesday, the swearing in ceremony will take place in the capital on Monday or Tuesday next week to enable the new legislators to execute the mandate they were given by the people of Zimbabwe.
The swearing-in ceremony had been delayed following the March 29 harmonised elections which did not produce a winner for the presidential race, resulting in the run-off on the 27th of June which was boycotted by the opposition presidential candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai.
The delay in the swearing-in and assumption of duty by the new parliamentarians was also meant to cater for the dialogue between the two MDC formations and the ruling Zanu PF party.
Zvoma said all support services and logistical requirements are in place for the successful holding of the ceremony.
Southern African Development Community (Sadc) heads of State and Government over the weekend called for Zimbabwe’s parliament to convene soon and allow President Mugabe to form a new government.
