Zim and Indonesia develop media exchanges

ZIMBABWE and Indonesia are set to strengthen ties through developing news exchanges between the two countries to counter western propaganda.

The Zimbabwean ambassador to
Indonesia has criticised western media for biased reporting on the Asian country and said that the country was worth visiting as it was rich in culture and in beautiful tourist sites with hospitable people.

Ambassador Alice Mageza told Indonesian media that in her four years as envoy, she had had beautiful experiences and said the country a peaceful country with a diversity of cultures.

"I am surprised to see that Indonesia is peaceful. I feel safe here," the Zimbabwean ambassador said.

"I have visited Sumatra and Sulawesi as well as a number of cities in Java like Cirebon and Semarang where the friendly people always made me feel at home. I enjoy the beautiful experiences here," she continued.

Zimbabwe and Indonesia are currently in the process of exploiting possible cooperation through news exchange between the news agencies of Zimbabwe and Indonesia in an effort to counter western media’s news stories which they said were “frequently biased”.

The proposed cooperation will take various forms including the exchange of journalist visits to cover the two countries’ potentials in all sectors.

One of the initiatives proposed was a scheme for Zimbabwe journalists to study photography at ANTARA news agency’s School of Journalism – which has produced reputable print as well as photo journalists.

ANTARA is the official news agency of the government of Indonesia. Its overseas bureaus are in Cairo, Canberra, Kuala Lumpur, New York City and Sanaá. And also in Tokyo and Beijing.

Zimbabwe has strong cooperation ties with Indonesia which is part of its “Look East policy”. Last year the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve bilateral cooperation in women empowerment sector, among other sectors.

Several Zimbabwean government delegations including women, the senate, and other organizations have been invited to Indonesia to strengthen people to people ties between the two countries.
