Pohamba calls for lifting of sanctions against Zim

Ralph Mutema

Wed, 24 Sep 2008 09:47:00 +0000

THE Namibian President, Hifikepunye Pohamba has called on Western countries to lift illegal sanctions imposed against Zimbabwe.

Pohamba made the call yesterday during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“We call for the immediate lifting of all sanctions that have been imposed on that country,” said Pohamba.

“We urge the international community to support the implementation of the agreement by providing economic, financial and humanitarian assistance,” he continued.

Pohamba made a similar call a fortnight ago after attending the historic signing of the power sharing deal by President Robert Mugabe and the two leaders of the Movement for Democratic formations, Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara.

The deal is a success for the people of Zimbabwe, SADC and Africa. Without the assistance from outside, they have found a solution," said Pohamba earlier this month.

During his address yesterday afternoon, the Namibian President also paid tribute to the facilitator in the Zimbabwean talks, outgoing President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki for his commitment to resolving the Zimbabwean crisis.

“We commend the SADC mediation efforts led by President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa who invested extraordinary skill, time and energy in the process,” he told the UN General Assembly.

• Surely you don't suppose the Namibians would have imposed or called for sanctions in order to offer a solution to the suffering Zimbabweans do you? Isn't it shameful that Pohamba by calling for the lifting of sanctions identifies with the simple basic needs that threaten the very existence of ordinary Zimbabweans more than the elected honourable MPs with distorted priorities? Is it so difficult to understand that lifting the sanctions will give a chance of life to the many enterprising Zimbabweans and to provide for their loved ones? Again I say if EU and USA can't help with anything fair enough they have a looming crisis on their door step, just lift those sanctions because they are not helping those that can't help themselves.

• Thaks gentleman, i understand your concerns for the Zim pple, but did you pose to think what sort of sanctions we have in Zim, thats why they are called targeted, we can still do buz with other countries, but certan individuals can not travel and do buz all over the world, because of our poor human rights record and being ad debtors, how cn we afford to have 31 ministries for such a small country, if you know the answer to these questions then we might be in the same situation, few individuals have all the resouurces at their disposal whilest mai shupi and baba shupi can not even afford a loaf of bread. Please LETS grow up and smell the coffee. Unity inemusoro ndizvo, kunyeperana kwete.

• Every situation has opportunists. In march last year while on holiday in Namibia, during one of the Namibian (live) parliamentary sessions. some parliamentarians put the Zimbabwean issue on the table for discussion and guess what. Those who wanted to seek solutions for Zimbabweans were out numbered by those who are scared of Mugabe and they were led by the former Namibia President's son. So nothing could be done about the plight of Zimbabweans. Pohamba was abroad on gov business, but he should have been briefed or seen the minutes of that sesssion on return. Why has he been quiet for such a long time. The Zimbabwean problem starts in Zimbabwe and that is where a solution is. The west can only facilitate with aid and loans. If one goes to the bank without a sound business plan is the bank refuses with its money no one should blame the bank. Comply or no money, show us what you gonna do differently and how, if not there is no money. Mugabe knows the rules so does Pohamba. Mugabe should inderstand that no country in the world is truly independent but can only achieve a certain degree of independence, no matter how powerful or rich. I wish something could be done for ZANU PF to understand that the political and economic landscape keeps changing and so they have to adjust accordingly.

• Dube and Shupikai -What kind of democrats are you if you are prepared to let the majority of Zims suffer( because of the illegal sanctions imposed by the West) so as to meet your political objectives? Is this your perveted version of uncaring democracy that you hope to be imposed in Zim? Have you Googled Zidera Act, 2001 and the EU sanctions and actually understood the implications of these measures.Pohamba must be congratulated for asking for the removal of sanctions.because he understands that it is the poor, the down trodden, the child -headed homes (due to Aids), the elderly, the sick who are bearing the brunt of these sanctions. How dare you that you want to exarcerbate their suffering for political ends? By calling for and supporting sanctions against the Zim populace, you have violated their human rights-right to food, right to medication etc. It is a good thing that people with your kind of views are in the minority. What callousness to wish another Zim hardship? For what? You are the only people in the history of mankind to call for sanctions against your own country for political reasons. As the saying goes Keep your mouth shut and let people assume you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

• Shupikai, if you are not being sarcastic and really want Mbeki to call for the lifting of sanctions, he did on the day they signed the deal. Nduna Dube how exactly does sanctions achieve democracy and the tenets of liberation war? What are sanctions to you? I'm asking because I believe you are genuinely concerned about Charamba's utterance, Mugabe supporters' thinking, the murder, butchering and raping of Zimbabweans. I share your dream of a safe and healthy nation but please just explain how sanctions will achieve our dream?

• It is too early to talk about lifting sanctions when the implementation of the agreement has already reached a stalemate. Why should Mugabe' supporters think other people are imbeciles. We know that ZANU is never sincere in its dealings please read Charamba's utterance to view ZANU's insincerity. Sanctions should stay in place till there is positive implementation of the deal. We are tired of seeing people murdered, butchered and raped when ever there are elections. Democracy is universal. One of the tenents of liberation war was one man one vote as well as freedom of choice and association. Let's be real.

• Why not let Mbeki call for the lifting of sanctions, you gave him the mandate to bring peace to Zim, if he is happy with the work he will call for the sanctions to be lifted, but for now wait till we have a cabinet and then call off the sanctings, thanks Mr Pohambe just keep your distance for now.
