The paradox of bailing out Zimbabwe

THE Mayor of New York, on BBC News ‘Hardtalk’ programme dropped a bombshell: “Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger will need US$7 billion dollars to rescue the State of California from going bankrupt! He has applied to the Federal Reserve for a bailout!”

The “credit crunch” which bit the financial institutions could well be biting US states, and in the next few days (or weeks) could hit countries. Iceland has been the first country to admit that it could ‘go bankrupt’.

Both US presidential candidates are still talking tax cuts. This is interesting capitalism. How can you talk tax cuts when you are going bankrupt?

The Lehman Brothers Chief Executive Richard S. Fuld revealed to a Congressional Committee this week that he had earned over US$250 million from the organisation during the boom times. Never mind the meagre salaries of the lower level staff in Lehman Brothers who are victims of the sub prime mortgage market, but mind the losses that Lehman Brothers suffered that are now being nationalised.

Fuld used his big paychecks to fund political campaigns by Democrats and a few Republicans, he admitted.

Los Angeles Times reported: “The biggest recipient of his largess has been the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at $47,000, including $10,000 last year. He gave another $10,000 to the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. Party leaders use donations to the committees to help fund races around the country.”

The newspaper went on: “His most recent federal donation, $5,000 in May, went to a political action committee funded by Wall Street firms -- some of which no longer exist -- that gave to an array of politicians. Fuld also gave directly to politicians, including $2,300 to Barack Obama in May 2007, and $2,300 to John McCain in March 2007.”

Still more details were revealed: “New York Sen. Charles Schumer has taken $6,000 from Fuld. Joseph Lieberman has taken $7,000.”

Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was also implicated in the scandal. Clinton disclosed the amounts paid in Federal Election Commission filings made last month, shortly after Lehman's Sept. 15 declaration of bankruptcy.

In Africa, this would have been simply called “corruption,” but not in America.

So would Clinton have disclosed these if Lehman Brothers had not folded? Would we have known about this level of corruption in a country low on the index of corruption if the international crisis had not unfolded? Should we keep looking up to these governments as our saviors in times of trouble? Should we keep making apologies for systems that are clearly crumbling, yet spending billions killing people?

Africans should now devise methods of dealing with, and charting their road to, the future without seeking the stewardship of individuals and governments that are themselves highly flawed.

If California is folding and needs a bailout, is Zimbabwe well poised to receive a bailout? Would America bail out Zimbabwe before it bails out California or some other state in the U.S.? Or possibly, it will keep making excuses about the inadequacy of the power-sharing deal to evade the huge promises made previously.

Is it not odd that MDC-T have been promised a bailout package of 1billion and yet the governor of California is thinking of a bail out package of 7billion. The city of Liverpool (UK) has been regenerated at the cost of 7billion. The rescue package envisaged for Zim by the West is a drop in the ocean. In return for this pittance, Zim will be forced to sign away its mineral, land and property rights. Someone is going to make a killing but who?
Google The Money Masters and educate yourselves Zims.

the system you describe is open , as all political candidates in the US and the Uk have to register first with congress and parliment thier financial intrests and so forth , as with political donations these are also registered and disclosed [available for public scrutiny] . whereas GOD forbid we know the financial interests of some of our politicians , or donations or how they fund thier parties. Zimbabwe needs credit line to be re-established.

as soon as Zim plugs up the holes (i.e., corrupt obese cats of the privileged few in ZANU) and calls off its dogs (Phiri, Gono, Chinamasa, etc.) protecting the looting to overseas accts, it is hard to find much sympathy for adding more money into their accts. Mugabe is the George Bush of Zim and both are killing their countries.....contrary to the author's dementia, neither Bob nor George are anything but criminals who both should be prosecuted and eliminated from society so the human wreckage they have personally left behind can begin to heal and being to imagine that there is a future worth living in their respective countries. Note to author: please forward your article/comments to the Herald....they love that sort of fantasy thinking.....but try to break down the words to 3rd grade level so Bright Matonga will be able to understand what you are saying.....and I understand he likes to look at the pictures and is not keen on words (sort of like George Bush). Have a nice day.

When will you start to understand the issues in Zimbabwe? Its not about bailing out or chikwereti etc. Its about misuse and abuse of resources. We have enough resources which needs unlocking. Zanupf should stop abusing and looting the resources and we will be home and dry.

Didnt anyone ever realise that going to war in the Middle East would be an extremely costly exercise?
It not only costs hundreds of lives, but Zimbabweans know all about war.
The West is going bust (fast) and i would not be surprised if McGee was instructed to tell Morgan to stall any agreements for a bit longer because right now those who promised to provide donations and financial aid to Zimbabwe are actually struggling to keep themselves afloat - and if he did agree to everything they would not be able to keep the promises they made him all those weeks ago, so he and they would look a bit stupid.
Except he did not spell it out on the golf course in such plain English just in case there were others in the surrounding foliage lip reading.
Just lift those sanctions and let us get on with it.

I think what we need as a country is to have access to credit lines not donations that come with strings attached.

Armed with these credit lines, we can borrow and start producing as Zimbabweans, pay back our loans, and generate our own wealth.

Kwete kunzi tokupai 1 billion pounds muka pfugama zvishoma( like what Satan did to Jesus)- ivo vachito shaya mari yekupa ma Bank avo ari ku kudubuka.
