MDC attacks ally, President Bush

Sun, 09 Nov 2008 22:50:00 +0000

THE Movement for Democratic Change party has ditched United States ally, George W. Bush and endorsed President-elect, Barack Obama.

The MDC remained largely mum on President Bush’s policies during his tenure, but criticized his administration soon after the election of Senator Barack Obama as the new President (elect) of the United States.

The MDC Secretary General, Tendai Biti, on Thursday last week issued a statement criticizing President Bush for his “unilateralism and arrogance”.

This is the first time the MDC has openly criticized President Bush whose administration openly endorsed the MDC.

“To us, Obama's victory is a victory of hope, faith, change, a restart, values and dreams which have underpinned our fight as a movement against dictatorship and … neo-fascism,” Biti said in a statement.

He added: “Obama’s victory will hopefully usher in a departure from the politics of polarization, fear, unilateralism and arrogance that has defined the Bush doctrine in the last eight years,” Biti said.

The MDC party has in the last eight years enjoyed a healthy relationship with the U.S. during the tenure of G.W. Bush.

The party’s leader, Morgan Tsvangirai enjoys cordial professional and personal relations with the Republican Ambassador to Zimbabwe, James McGee with whom he plays golf in Harare.

The Zanu PF government has in the past criticized the Bush administration for openly supporting the MDC party, saying that they were seeking to effect “regime change” in the Southern African country.

The MDC leader, however, issued a more cautious statement in which he pledged to work with the new U.S. President after his inauguration at the end of January 2009. It is not clear whether Tsvangirai shares the sentiments expressed by Biti, but this is not the first time the two MDC leaders have sent conflicting statements.

Biti's statement will not be well-received by the U.S. embassy in Harare, and by the outgoing Republican administration of President G.W. Bush, which has previously openly expressed their support for the MDC and their preference for Morgan Tsvangirai as President of Zimbabwe.

Efforts to reach the U.S. embassy officials in Harare at the time of going to print proved fruitless.

This comment section is for people to comment on the topic and issues being discussed thereon, just goes to show that NA does not appreciate the way the world economy works. The US$ is the currency of choice and is a defacto standard. Like the meter and not inch, foot or yard. the £ is not the refernence point on the international market. Go to any other country, not the UK and ask for the pound. Do not be surprised if you are told that they can give you the US$. The way you think........ Am sorry mate, you just bark like the herald just to provoke emotions or arguments or clarification. That is a journalistic ploy and you as a n individual get on with the issue at hand and not create mayhem.

Biti, Biti- The hot air from Biti is enough to power a hot air balloon.Isn't it disingenous of Biti to start biting the hand (Bush's) that has fed him and the MDC-T all these years and given them the oxygen of publicity? Biti should always remember that the US has permanent interests and not permanent friends. Has Biti signed his own end of shelf life usefulness to the US with his utterances? History is littered with such examples.

Biti was given authority by McGee to send that message. Thats why it took them long to realise that America had a President elect.

It was only after Mc Gee met them and gave them assurances about no change in Policy that they decided to send a message to OBAMA.

Calling Bush arrogant, was an attempt at self cleansing with the hope that this would endear MDC to Obama.

Whichever way, MDC is a mistake that was created by the West-we hope this change we can beleive in will consign MDC to the dustbin of history just like what is happening to UNITA now.

as a politically non alighned citizen of zimbabwe who loves zimbabwe so much,i read the news and views of my fellow zimbabweans who put out comments.

this story is quite interesting coz as far as i'm concerned, i would never befriend a neo facsist,a neo nazi, or a neo colonialist, i would never ask for help from a neo nazi. remember the crucification of Christ, before he was crucified, Jesus asked for water and they gave him vineger yaivava, haana kunwa.

by asking for help from BUSH, didn't MDC realise they were a sighning a wolf to herd sheep and for Biti to NOW say that bush was arrogant ,he is a neo fascist blah blah blah is just embarassing .thats where i dont overstand politricks you see, because politicians always ignore the reality and facts on the ground.

its shame that nowadays my people are being contolled by politricks, they no longer seek the truth and facts before they pass their judgment,

Are we noticing the dawn of a new era whereby MDC as a party will officially join Zimbabweans of all walks of life to call for the lifting of the crippling sanctions? On the other side Biti is the worst hypocrite if he chooses to attack Bush when one can be forgiven for thinking MDC as a party owe their survival and ascendance to international recognition to the Bush administration. Maybe MDC wants to prove that they are a home grown and independant people's project by criticising Bush at a time when criticism of the USA presidency is more directed at Obama than Bush. Sorry MDC that propaganda doesn't sell. We all know that you gave the Bush administration the alluby they needed to interfer with Zimbabwe's internal affairs and willingly connived to empower Bush to sign into law the calamitous ZIDERA which brought the misery that we face as a nation today. For that you will have to do much more to prove the sincerity of your rhetoric care for ordinary helpless Zimbabweans.

The MDC is full of birds of a kind.

They are not of the same plummage hence they don't even sing from the same hymn book.

Mumwe nemumwe anotaura zvaanoda nguva nenguva.

Already rumours are rife that the elections were rigged. so what. however, if they were rigged, in OB's favour my belief is it is because the USA never got a chance to colonise Africa before in the old days. and though they have tried desperately to do so the USA has failed. My contention therefore is that in order to do so they had to have a black man at the helm. And their new plan is obviously working - why else is it that the pound sterling is of absolutely no consequence in Zimbabwe anymore whereas the US$ NOW RULES?
