Zimbabwe opposition group divided

SHARP divisions have rocked the Zimbabwe Organisation of Opposition Political Parties, a loose coalition of small political parties, over the decision by some members to transform the entity grouping six organisations into a fully-fledged political party.

Political parties affiliated to ZOPP are Zanu (Ndonga), Multi-racial Christian Democrats, Zapu FP, Zimbabwe Development Party, the Zimbabwe People’s Progressive Democratic Party and the Voice of the People.

ZOPP came together under the leadership of Mr Paul Gotora of the Zimbabwe People Progressive Democratic Party.

They have in the past been speaking with one voice on national issues like condemnation of sanctions and have been attending national events such as heroes’ burials and Independence Day.

In an interview, Mr Gotora said the organisation was in the process of consulting its members on the feasibility of transforming it into a political party.

"We are still making consultations among our members and the final decision would be determined by the outcome of the consultation process.

"Yes, an intention exists to transform ZOPP into a political party, but that has to be endorsed by our members," said Mr Gotora.

He, however, said the consultations were at an advanced stage.
