Zimbabwe gets US$70 000 from Tanzania for cholera efforts

A CONSIGNMENT containing 40 tonnes of drugs and equipment worth US$70 000 to help combat the cholera outbreak has arrived in Zimbabwe from Tanzania.

Earlier this month, the spokesman for Tanzanian President and current Chair of the African Union, Jakaya Kikwete, made the pledge to donate cholera fighting kits to Zimbabwe.

The consignment received in the capital Harare includes chlorinated lime, anti-biotics, infusion sets and latex gloves among others which are urgently needed to combat the crisis.

Tanzania, the only Sadc member state from East Africa, has vowed to help Zimbabwe fight the current public health crisis and urged all the countries in the region and internationally to help fight the epidemic.

Speaking after receiving the consignment, the Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr. David Parirenyatwa and the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and Urban Development, Dr. Ignatius Chombo commended the people of Tanzania for responding to Zimbabwe’s plight “without prejudice”.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to our brothers, the Tanzanians, for their solidarity and urgency in responding to our call for assistance,” said Dr. Parirenyatwa.

“The Ministry of Health together with related ministries are working hard to arrest the spread of the cholera epidemic and we commended the Tanzanian government for its timely intervention,” added Dr. Parirenyatwa.

Dr. Chombo said that Tanzania “responded to the call urgently and without judging us.”

“We would like to thank the Tanzanian Government for the timely donation and their humanely gesture,” added Dr. Chombo.

“We hope that bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and Tanzania will always be strong.”

During the hand over ceremony, the Tanzanian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Jaji Rajabo said the relationship between Tanzania and Zimbabwe dates back to the liberation struggle and it should be strengthened.

CALL FOR INCLUSIVE GOVERNMENT

Tanzania joined the increasing number of countries urging Zimbabwe’s main political parties (Zanu PF and the two MDC formations) to form an all-inclusive Government.

Dismissing Western calls for militarized intervention under the Responsibility to Protect banner, President Kikwete said the AU and Tanzania did not consider invasion an option.

President Kikwete also endorsed the facilitation efforts of Sadc under former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, although the MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai had indicated that they were no longer recognizing him as an impartial mediator.

Ironically, the MDC requested President Kikwete to be the new mediator.

The person who post his contribution calling himself or herself ZIMBO FOR SURE needs to be countered. Tanzania has chipped in with help and his article makes me sick. It appears all what this chap wanted was for all countries to look and leave Zimbabwean people dying from the cholera out break. What he forgets is that other countries have gone through the same problems before and Zimbabwe was on the fore front to assisting them.

For your own information in SADC Mozambique and Zambia has had this problem and Zimbabwe contributed a lot to curb its devastation. Its only people like you who don't know where you are coming from or going who are killing Africa.

The PM-designate can rest in Botswana until Gordon Brown realises that it is futile to keep on hoping that Mugabe is a bad dream that will soon go away. He can simply acknowledge that there is no African leader worth his salt who is going to accept being told to go by a westerner who yesterday was tormenting and treating him like dog. Not until he builds bridges with Bob and allows his puppet to join the inclusive govt can we expect Chematama Ichi to join the govt. So keep on saying ''Dumela'' to your newlyfound best friend Khama in that barren bushman's land and stay there until your boss changes his attitude! Zimbabwe will never collapse so you will wait, and wait and wait until you retire to your mansion in SA paid for you by the British taxpayer. Just like Severino Moto in Spain!

Yes thanks for drugs but i wonder if they will work as well to purify the same drinking water from which cholera is coming and i wonder if this will sustain us for the coming months. Thanks Tanzania for being good at covering up the problem rather than solving it!

So TCJ, if Botswana keeps the Prime Minister until the economy has collapsed as you say, is that to your interest? If not, why are you advising them to do that? Are you one of the beneficiaries of this crisis, which you want prolonged?

Tanzania has set an example for other fellow Africans and has also shown the rest of the world the values we share. To our brothers in SADC who decided to betray these values by advocating militarism and the use of force to topple an elected President. Those who chose confrontation within the SADC instead of diplomacy and open discussion through power sharing negotiation led by the honourable Cde Thabo Mbeki. Today we question the type of neighbourhood they desire.

Those who described our election processes a sham, they are a shame themselves, because they don’t pose a moment to ask themselves why EU members don’t criticise each other openly. One or two countries can not be allowed to destroy African values today or tomorrow.

To the Tswanas (Botswana) we say please keep your Prime minister Tsvangirai until the collapse or the revival of the Zimbabwean economy and governance. I don’t think anyone will lose their sleep if Botswana were to join the EU because they failed to boot Zimbabwe from SADC, by majority though they are out and may be re-admitted on commitment to sharing same values of SADC. Count yourself in or stay out because Africa will never be a colony again.

God Bless Africa.
