Cholera: China donates extra US$500,000

Tue, 23 Dec 2008 22:29:00 +0000

CHINA donated an extra US$500,000 U.S. dollars to Zimbabwe on Tuesday to boost the country's efforts to combat the cholera epidemic which has killed more than 1,000 people since the first outbreak in August.

He Meng, the Charge d'Affair of the Chinese Embassy in Harare, confirmed the donation during a press conference at the Ministry of Health in Harare.

Meng said the donation was a response to the announcement by the Government that the cholera crisis was a national emergency.

He added that as a friend of Zimbabwe, the Chinese were concerned about the cholera epidemic.

“At the moment, Zimbabwean people are eagerly waiting for assistance fighting against cholera, we sincerely hope and believe that the money would be made best use of under the coordination of the Zimbabwean government and UN agencies, so as to alleviate the epidemic situation and help Zimbabwean people to overcome challenges at an earlier date, " He said.

More than 1,100 people have died of cholera while nearly 24,000 cases have been reported in Zimbabwe since August this year.

Efforts to fight cholera got a major boost at the weekend when the country received 140 tons of medical supplies from the United Nations Children's Fund, a US$30 million injection from South Africa and donations from Tanzania, Botswana and Namibia.

The boost was in response to an emergency appeal by Sadc to combat the crisis in the country.

Non-governmental organisations and UN agencies have also assisted through the provision of incentives for staff working in cholera treatment centres, logistics and experienced staff.

The assistance from the donor community is earmarked either for cholera and the revival of Zimbabwe’s health sector.

Malick-Aid Agencies are used as foreign policy tools and for covert and overt operations by the WEST. The Chines don't operate like that and hence don't need Aid Agencies. They prefer to deal with governments openly as brothers and equal partners. So their Ministry of Foreign affairs is adequate for that,

Malick, white boy, this is the second donation of US$500,000 the Chinese has made, in the time of two weeks, for a total of US$1, 000, 000. China is the single largest contributor outside of Africa. Now, regarding Zimbabwe detractors, the nations of the West, these nations governments have not donated
anything to help with the cholera situation, only humanitarian and charity organizations in some nations of the west have contribute. But lets say you are right about the western nations combine contribute a total of US$10, 000, 000, the fact remain that no one nation in the west contribute anything remotely close to US$1,000, 000 as the single nation China has. Continuing with your assertion that the west has contribute US$10, 000, 000, then it is clear that the west has a GOD complex, the west gives with the left hand and take away with the right hand, give charity with the left hand, but before doing so first create the Cholera situation by taking away Zimbabwean livelihood and health system with the right hand through illegal sanctions.

China is supposed to be our friend yet they donate a paltry US 500 000? Our enemies and detractors have donated over US10 000 000 for the treatment of cholera in the country. Can someone tell me of any chinese aid or humanitarian agencies?

FROM THE CHRONICLE MR QUOTING MR HE MENG-We initially intended to donate cholera vaccines worth US$500 000 but there were some technical problems in the distribution and storage of the vaccine.
“Therefore, we decided to donate in cash so that the Government can purchase vaccines on the local market or from the neighbouring countries.
