Tsvangirai rules out foul play

Prime Minister Tsvangirai and his late wife, Susan

PRIME MINISTER, Morgan Tsvangirai, today ruled out foul play in the car accident that killed his wife, Susan, and left him wounded on Friday.

Tsvangirai flew into the Zimbabwean capital, Harare, this morning ahead of his wife's funeral on Wednesday.

He was wearing dark glasses over a swollen eye and his face was still swollen but with no bandages visible.

Tsvangirai, 56, who addressed a crowd outside his home in Strathaven said: "It was an accident. When something happens there is always speculation, but I want to say in this case, if there was any foul play, it was [a likelihood of] one in a thousand."

The Movement for Democratic Change leader returned to Zimbabwe on Monday after being treated over the weekend in a hospital in neighbouring Botswana, telling reporters at Harare's airport, "I'm feeling fine".

The Tsvangirais had been married for 31 years and were travelling from Harare to their rural home in Buhera on Friday afternoon when their vehicle was involved in an accident with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

Aides close to Mr Tsvangirai say that he is in 'huge emotional shock' over Mrs Tsvangirai's death.

The prime minister, his driver and his head of security were taken to hospital. The driver of the lorry, Chinoona Mwanda, 35, was unhurt.

Mwanda's lawyer, Chris Mhike, said his client was "deeply distressed" and intended to plead not guilty to culpable homicide at a court appearance later Monday.

The road on which the Tsvangirais were travelling is in poor condition but potholes on the stretch where the accident happened have recently been filled in. Near the accident site there is, however, a protruding bump that is believed to be road-mending material left by workers.

"We know that we shall all die, but let's celebrate the life of Susan because we have gone through trials and tribulations together," said Tsvangirai adding that he had returned to Harare to resume his duties in Zimbabwe's inclusive Government because that is what his wife would have wanted.

The death triggered an outpouring of grief across the country in a show of the couple's popularity. Thousands of mourners were keeping vigil outside the house where Susan Tsvangirai's body is lying in state.

A rally in honour of Susan Tsvangirai, who was 50, will be held Tuesday on the prime minister's 57th birthday

She will be buried on Wednesday in Buhera. She is survived by six children.

The deputy prime minister, Thokozani Khuphe, is handling day-to-day affairs until at least Wednesday. The finance minister, Tendai Biti, has stressed the government will continue its work in Tsvangirai's absence.

Professor Jonathan Moyo (Independent MP in Zimbabwe) has called for the investigation of USAid activities in Zimbabwe with reference to the involvement of USAid drivers in incidences involving senior political figures in Zimbabwe .(http://www.newzimbabwe.com/pages/primeminister26.19498.html). To understand where Moyo is coming from, Google John Perkins confessions of the economic hitman or visit (http://www.democracynow.org/2004/11/9/confessions_of_an_economic_hit_man).
Perkins describes “how as a highly paid professional, he helped the U.S. cheat poor countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars by lending them more money than they could possibly repay and then take over their economies. You guys are busy mourning someone you do not even know, who was not even a public figure, and you want the world to join you...well you have a lot of mourning to do...now Zvinavashe is dead....more excuse for more mourning...especially for you who pride yourselves in mourning...

I suppose as Zimbabweans, you think there is pride in suffering for nothing...no wonder many of you applauded when sanctions were being imposed....did you really believe the sanctions would create a road hazard bump at Chancellor Street...well ...evidently not...the bump was near the Mhondoro turn off...and you know who was caught in an accident ye hand of God ikoko.

If you are a true Zimbabwean, you will right now ask for forgiveness through this forum. As Zimbabweans, we totally dont think the way you do. Are you trying to create havoc in our country? Anyway, no sober minded person will listen to you. To all true Zimbabweans, I say do not be disturbed mourning our dear Mama' because of people like Tisu, and to Tsvangirai, I say you have shown the entire world how mature you are and everyone is in support of you. May our dear LORD bless you abundantly. We are together. Sisonke. Tiri pamwe.

Guys read Prof Moyo's comment and get facts. For the first time the prof managed to find the target. What a logical peace of analysis. However, the prof missed the point that even MDCs and ZANU PF are also suspects until proved innocent.

Today I am proud of our PM just for resisting to follow the understable flurry of conspiracy theories all for the sake of uniting Zimbabweans from all walks of life. That's a lesson for Tisu Vatongi that our political leaders seem to have realised that time for retributive politics is over. The new Zimbabwe that we dream of has no place for such cold, insensitive and heartless behaviour. Sorry mate you are such an overwhelming minority with your dateless lack of human morals and in all honesty I think you are abusing your freedom of expression. Akuruma nzeve ndewako mwana wamai. You are losing it.

Next time we talk of Targeted Sanctions ...we must know, sanctions can boomerang and kill the very people cheering the Targeted Sanctions.

The Americans are guilty of Tsvangson's wife death and a full investigation must be done...The Americans must answer for their assasination gone wrong!

Why is the British Foreign office quick to call it an accident? Why did they advise Mr Tsvangson not to use State Security and the armoured car supplied to him.

Even Mandela, popular as he was, needed security.

They say closing the stable after the horse has bolted but I hope the PM will realise that he needs State Security not Security provided by mahudhu eMDC, trained in Botswana...Botswana..a country with an army that would never succeed in invading a desert, according to deputy PM, AGO Mutambara.

I find it very strange that you spend most of your time passing such ridiculous comments which do not build but destroy. Again i tell you that the words of your mouth shall be a yard stick for your judgement. You might feel as if you are being great passing such disrespectful comments but one day, i mean one day - you will rip what you are sowing.

To all peace loving Zimbabweans i say let us continue preaching the gospel of piece and unity. Our nation will conquer, God is in control and breakthrough has come. Who could imagine Mugabe and Tsvangira sharing power. This is the hand of God, not man, not SADC. Even Tsvangirai's comments that this accident was natural shows a real man, a real leader. He could have scored political points by insisting that ZANU PF had a hand in it. However he chose to be a man of piece, a man of reconciliation, a man of unity. May God bless you Prime Minister. President Mugabe well done for being the first to visit Tsvangirai. You have shown that though you were once enemies you are now comrades, brothers and allies in building Zimbabwe.

Again let this accident remind every politician that death is real and they can die. The few days they have on earth must be spend on building people's lives. As for you people like Tisu Vatongi and Omgabe please seek God's face, and i really mean it. This is not a joke. You people will be judged among those that are destroying Zimbabwe. It is not too late, repent and change your ways, change your comments and constructive for once only.

Long live Zimbabwe, long live unit government and May God bless Zimbabwe.

What is wrong with you Tisu Vatongi? Why do you hate Tsvangirai that much? Don't u have any humanity at all? I do not think tht you would want that said to you if you happen to be in the PM's predicament. Mugabe, Tsvangirai and Mutambara came together after realising that their conflicts was taking the country nowhere. Even in China at one time change was brought regarding closed door policy ushering in opening up policy, that has brought about prosperity enjoyed by Chinese today. What Mugabe did was necessary that time to empower the blacks and everyone knows that this cannot be reversed. What we all now need is to improve on it by making sure that we re-engage the so called international community which unfortunately calls the shots in financial circles at the moment. Not doing so will only cause Zimbos more sufferring. Our leaders are trying to do exactly that. Remember they had different ideologies and it will be fallacy to expect them to immediately agree on how to move fwd. Let them fight behind closed doors in Parly and Cabinet but unite in the end. Lets give them a chance, avoid unnecessary hate language. Chemawo nevamwe Tsvangirai is the PM of ZIM not MDC-T party whether you like it or not.

The bugger is an idiot...Most people go for a rest AFTER they have overseen the funeral arrangements for their wife...

A few cuts and bruises here and there, I am afraid, is no excuse to abandon your children when they are mourning their mother...to go for a rest in Botswana!

Tsvangson scores an umpteenth own goal!!!
