'No political prisoners in Zimbabwe'

PRESIDENT Mugabe and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Simbarashe Mumbengegwi have denied media reports that there are political prisoners in Zimbabwe.

Speaking on two separate occasions this week, the two leaders denied denied that Zimbabwe had political prisoners saying the country upheld the rule of law.

Addressing journalists after his meeting with visiting Norwegian Minister of Environment and International Trade Erik Solheim, Minister Mumbengegwi said: "We have never had political prisoners in Zimbabwe and the three parties making up the inclusive Government have agreed that suspects go through the whole process of the law through the courts."

All those who had any grievances, Minister Mumbengegwi said, should seek redress in the courts.

In a closed-door meeting with the visiting Norwegian minister on Wednesday, President Mugabe is said to have reiterated the same issue.

He said that Zimbabwe had political prisoners and indicated that all persons presently before the country’s courts were facing criminal charges that required prosecution.

Officials said the President also pointed out that no farm invasions were taking place.

Instead, President Mugabe said, Government was facing resistance from white commercial farmers who were refusing to vacate land that had legally been acquired for resettlement by the State.

"The President was very categorical on the fact that these people were in the courts on criminal charges that do not have anything to do with politics.

"He also cleared the air on the purported ‘fresh farm invasions’ as Government was actually facing resistance from white former commercial farmers who were served letters indicating that the farms had been acquired for resettlement," an official told the Herald newspaper.

The definition of what constitutes a political prisoner is now very blurred. It appears anyone can commit a crime and then claim activist status to be accorded the label of political prisoner. What a travesty of justice.

The Iranian president once told the west that they could call back all their ancestors back from hell but this was not going to stop the Iranian people from achieving whatever they wished to achieve as a nation.

Like wise as true Patriotic Zimbabweans we say to all regime change agents, and those of the Mugabe must go drama club and those of the crash and burn, you can all combine together and bring all your ancestors back from hell. This will not stop or prevent the march of the Zimbabwean people to self determination. And Mugabe is not going anywhere not for now.You can pray for his death but make sure your prayer is properly stated knowing God is for us all. Get this loud and clear. And we remind you again that we have no apology to make to anyone of you.

We are so tired of this useless recycled slogan Mugabe must go. Its something you have failed to archive and will never archive and its so nauseating. We are inviting you to join us in building a strong Zimbabwe.Chimukai kwayedza. Sekusile.

Maybe someone should tell us what a political prisoner is. My understanding of a political prisoner is someone imprisoned for having a different political view to that of the one imprisoning. This political prisoner must also be prominent enough to be a symbol of inspiration in any movement so that the arrest is meant to threaten and discourage the followers eg Nelson Mandela. Otherwise without a clear understanding of what a political prisoner is, we risk terming any prisoner who supports any other party other than Zanu PF a political prisoner.

I think we need to have a definition of a political crime or political prisoner. Most Zimbabweans seem now to define a political crime as a crime committed by a politician.
