Ireland clears Angolan and Somali landmines

SINCE 2000, Ireland has supported the work of HALO Trust, a non-governmental organisation, removing mines and leftover explosives throughout conflict-affected countries around the world for over 20 years.

Yesterday Ireland’s Overseas Development Minister, Michael Kitt, revealed that Halo Trust is to receive support in the sum of US$3.1M.

Landmines and leftover explosives cause horrific injuries, and maim or kill up to 20,000 people each year, provoking untold suffering and impeding the consolidation of peace.

Said Overseas Dev Minister, Michael Kitt: “The extensive presence of landmines and explosive remnants of war in Angola, Somalia and Afghanistan is a serious obstacle to rehabilitation and recovery.”
