African soccer roundup

Sports reporter

LONDON ─ Here’s a roundup of African soccer brought weekly courtesy of the African Soccer Agency.

2010 FIFA World Cup

OPTIMISTIC reports continue to indicate that construction work on the newstadiums is progressing well despite a background of some power cuts in South Africa.

Indeed it could be that some of the stadiums (including Soccer City) will be completed ahead of schedule. But maybe not the one in Port Elizabeth (a semi-final venue) as the work on that stadium seems to be behind schedule.

Africa Cup
2010

In Angola a technical team has been created to monitor progress on the stadium developments for the 2010 event. Planned stadium locations are in the capital Luanda and in the provinces of Benguela, Cabinda and Huila.

Player Gossip

More rumours of discontent, almost inevitably , within Chelsea. Perhaps Michael Essien (Ghana) and Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast) will be moving to Spain?

Whereas goalkeeper Carlos Kameni (Cameroon) might well be moving in the opposite direction - to the Premiership.

General News

Because of the political situation, the British government are contemplating banning all Zimbabwean sportsmen from competing in the UK. This would affect Benjani Mwaruwari, currently playing for Premier League Manchester City.

In an apparent change of strategy the International FA Board, with FIFA/UEFA input, have decided not to implement any goal-line technology in the near future. Instead, as suggested by Michel Platini the UEFA President, experiments will take place using two additional match officials to adjudicate on goal-line decisions.

The contract of Tunisian coach Roger Lemerre will not be renewed in June this year. It is understood that at least four well known names have been contacted as possible replacements.

Special mention for Olukayode Odejayi (Nigeria) and Sulley Muntari (Ghana) as they scored the winning goals for Barnsley (vs Chelsea) and Portsmouth (against Manchester Utd) in the FA Cup quarter finals.
