SO when exactly did Simba Makoni, one of the Wise Men From The East, as Magaisa would say, decide that he wanted to run for President?
Was it before or after Mandaza published the supposed-to-be-damaging book by reclusive Edgar Tekere? Or was it after the supposed ‘party-to-destroy-Zanu-PF-from-within’ was founded?
I guess these are merely rhetoric questions as any answer will not tell a different story about Makoni than we already know.
Don’t you just get suspicious when someone announces their candidacy for President and then keeps the rest of the ‘gang’ a secret? Is it because they are Zanu PF members or simply because they are not yet ready to come out in the open? Either way, why would they shun the publicity? Some grandiose strategy perchance?!
It’s interesting that Makoni has ‘seen the light’ after twenty-seven years of service to the government of President Mugabe.
In the last ten years, according to Makoni, things got so worse that he had to leave the ruling party. But before he leaves, he attempts to contest the Makoni seat, as a last attempt at political leadership. After that proves impossible, he then remembers that at the last Congress he was robbed of the opportunity to run for Zanu PF leadership. He, therefore, decides to run for Presidency as an independent candidate, but still retain his loyalty and allegiance to the Zanu PF party.
That does not sound like a Wise Man From The East. Rather, it smells opportunism.
Political orientation
The East is where the sun rises from â ‘The Orient.’ So, I suppose, when you are from there you have the best ‘Orientation’. Yet the latest move by Makoni doesn’t show serious political orientation or calculation.
As if announcing his Presidential ambition was not confusing and shocking enough; he decides not to reveal whether he would form a political party or not; or who he would form it with, if he did. He lets the rumour mill spin.
The worst case scenario for Makoni is if the press rumour mill runs so fast that it destroys his strategy; like it did last month when he chickened out after The Zimbabwe Guardian revelations.
This time it will be his ‘secret society’ that might chicken out and he will be left with only “A Few Good Men.”
The threats of the War Veterans cannot be ignored at this juncture. They're still a formidable force.
Any member of Zanu PF right now who was thinking about joining Makoni could be developing ‘cold feet.’ If they were not, they would have pledged their allegiance at the onset. Why wait? Nomination dates, and the elections are just around the corner.
If Makoni so loved Zanu PF and its ideology, that he gave half his only life; why did he leave the party when he did, or at least contest from within? This is reminiscent of the MDC split; where a faction breaks away and retains the identity of the original party its splitting from, much to the detriment of the original form.
Judging from how easily the news spread that Makoni was going to form a party; the identities of Makoni’s ‘secret society’ will be easy to figure out.
We suspect, however, that there are some dubious characters who could deal a death blow to the Makoni political project if they are named now. Or otherwise they're Zanu PF members who want to see if they are going to get a nomination first and if not, then oppose the original party.
And if they lose a nomination; why would they join a political party that is not going to field candidates? What would make them believe that Simba will win the election and include them in his future government? What if he loses? And if they are business-people, they could be worried about loss of their assets, targeting, etc. if Mugabe wins. Because of these reasons, they could retreat into their comfort zones.
The extension of the nomination date is significant in that it shows the ruling party re-strategising and re-configuring. This re-configuration alters Makoni’s plan. Zanu PF will aim to put him on the defensive as they did with the MDC, until they destroy his project and 'its people'.
Wide consultation with Zanu PF party members by Makoni
If it’s true that Makoni has consulted widely with Zanu PF, Makoni had better be careful.
Which Zanu PF members has he consulted with? The ones contesting primary elections right now? The ones sending their CVs for consideration?
If they are not contesting, then what are the chances of unseating a government with MPs? Makoni has dismissed a possible alliance with Tsvangirai â who at the minute commands more respect than he does, at the grassroots at least.
Tsvangirai also has MPs in ‘safe constituencies.’ Is Simba going to contest these constituencies with his group? His group will certainly miss the deadline… Or lose the seats. Or contest and lose.
Simba will then have to wait until the next general election; unless he tries to use force, to effect change.
President Mugabe has just come back from the AU meeting and a lot will be happening in the next few days.
How secretive can the Makoni project be? We know how virally information spreads in this day and age. And besides you only need a few quid to have even the richest guy in Zimbabwe to spill the beans.
So Makoni beware! The project might turn out to be the biggest joke of the year.
If "someone in Zanu PF" knows about it, I'm sure someone would just say something. It’s just impossible to keep it secret. Zvinovaremera. Believe me.
Right now Mugabe, being the political tactician that he is, is tirelessly whipping his crew. He will almost certainly try to contain intra-party dissent before it splits the party.
You do not shock a government-in-power in stages. You simply ‘shock-and-awe’. If you delay, you lose. Governments in power have the capacity and means to curtail dissent. A strong and complicated patronage system is one such means used to appease elements that could be thinking otherwise.
It would be preposterous to suppose that Makoni could shock the Zanu PF system twice in a month. He shocked it yesterday.
Zanu PF right now is tirelessly re-strategizing and putting safeguards and the propaganda machinery in place; while Makoni is busy consolidating his new structures.
Think about it. What shock has Zanu PF not gone through in the past 10 years, or since it was founded in 1963? Losing a general election. But Simba will not be able to field in candidates to challenge the MDC and Zanu PF. He could garner some votes at the Presidential election, but not enough to defeat Mugabe.
Zanu PF knows more about political and economic misfortunes; from actual affairs to alleged affairs; to potentially alleged affairs, than any other party in Zimbabwe. I just don't see how a "Big" move by Makoni could ever be kept secret for an hour, let alone for the next week or so.
So the Wise Man From The East should wary the resilience of a party that has seen a lot; from murders, assassinations, betrayal, etc. and has fought evil racial systems in the past, and could still fight more in future.
Yet, this could also be a watershed for Zimbabwe and Makoni could prevail.
But, judging from the misfortunes of the erstwhile Wise Men From The East, he better take heed.
Unless he works with other forces that took the original initiative (the MDC, NCA, WOZA, MOZA, and various progressives), he could retreat to the 'East' with egg in the face.

Nash ⢠n/a Subject: the project aint goin nowhere Fri, 08 Feb 2008 00:04:02 ⢠You are absolutely right editor - Simba Makoni was made of Zanu PF and it brought him up, he was part of the supreme decision-making body. So what has gone wrong after 27yrs in the wings of Zanu PF, why did he not voice his dissent from within? We are beginning to doubt his loyalty to everything he was and will be associated with - me thinks Makoni was all along working to destroy Zanu PF from within hoping to capitalise on the demise of the populace. In other words he was a silent assassin - which places him in a very dangerous category.
I`d rather give Tsvangison my vote, for the mere fact that once upon a time, he fought for my rights when he was a labour activist - than being used by someone who had become a political reject, who has never won any election. It's all the work of the so-called intellectuals who have put this project together, but then again, as I said before this is the most educated, confused but not learned lot- they dont seem to understand zimbabwean poltics. They will all be disappointed again.
Cde Matoto Emheni ⢠n/a Subject: Simba Makoni????? WHO???? Thu, 07 Feb 2008 16:46:57 ⢠Talk about confusion & procrastination in the run up to the elections. Makoni should have laid his cards on the table months ago so as to give himself time to lay out his stall. He is obviously hoping to benefit from a protest vote by disgruntled Zimbabweans who have been defrauded by Zanu PF (which he was a big part of) & the pussy footing confusion that is the MDC of today. Good luck Simba Makoni.....BUT....should you win, can you let us know how you will get round to forming a government. Who are the big hitters backing you? Are you looking at a government of national unity of progressive, sober minded professionals that will lift us out of our doldrums? Others might view this with suspicion after the breakfast meeting with Mugabe from which he came singing a completely different tune. Personally I would prefer Makoni to the other candidates (Bob, Morgan & Arthur), but with elections looming this man faces one incredible task. The war vets have already made their position clear. The army, airforce & police laid their cards on the table at the last elections declaring they would never support anyone without liberation war credentials. Further where on earth will Makoni find the resources in such a short spell of time to defeat the Zanu PF war machinery let alone the so-called western funded coffers of either of the MDC? Where will he get the much needed publicity given the news blackouts that targets people of his sort & moreover given that there is hardly a full day of electricity in Zim, how can he possibly use any form of media even if given that remote chance. Had Makoni been used as the MDC trump card before the dismal failure of their so-called unity talks we might have had better hope here. But this again will be another ZUM to DOOM scenario I am afraid. Mugabe is far too clever for this & Simba might just go down in history as the one who gave us hope only to fade soon after the elections. I wonder with all the shortages in Zim if he will even find a single post-it-note sized piece of paper to make election campaign materials. I hope that Makoni is as clever as he is made out to be otherwise we are in for another HUGE disappointment.

You may question why Simba did not do this or that but the fact is the floodgates will be open next week. More people will join by end of next week. Some will even remain inside until the right time. It all about timing. It takes a lot of calculation to dislodge Mugabe and his CIO thugs. Many have tried and failed.
Mugabe has been dealt a fatal blow...from within. Why do you think Makoni should form a new party???? Dont you get it????
All the Army generals-the police chief and the CIO need protection after years of plunder and other grave sins. they run the rigging process. Each election year a commando post of army , police and CIO officers is set to covertly rig the elections.
Makoni has made a deal with these people to protect them. So Makoni wins the vote by the same style. Let Bob Swallow his own Medicine for once!!!!
Elections are not won because you have a lot of grassroots support in Zimbabwe..elections are won by rigging!
CIO is now devided and the army generals are also ready for change.. and that is what the MDC can not do..Bringing in the rank and file of the army and the poloce as well as the dreaded CIO.
But Mujuru can do that.. and other insiders. Its like they know the tricks,,,,Duh.
The BIG QUESTION IS CAN THEY REPRESENT THE PEOPLE??? May be not but thats the best option so far.
Get rid of Mugabe. Then form a gorvenment of national unity and then we will move on from there.
The direct path to freedom has failed...the MDC WOULD NEVER HAVE WON AN ELECTION AGAINST MUGABE.(PERIOD)

Here we go again â the jealousy card being thrown into our midst because Simba Makoni is as young and as ambitious as Barack Obama! Can anyone explain to this murungu why Simba Makoni, a long-standing member of Zanu PF, would not share the values of the party he has always been associated with, if he were given the chance and the blessing of our President to continue with his plans? Why force him out into the cold to stand as an Independent?
It is a fact that many old men have died in their sleep, and God forbid, that this should happen toPresident Robert Mugabe. Kenya is possibly an example of what happens when chaos rules.
Our President in turn would shudder and roll in his grave to think he had not had the intuition to give his blessing and secure ZanuPF in place with a vibrant successor before his demise. After all, Robert Mugabe also represents the head of Zanu-PF, and as such I believe he would like to see Zanu-PF continue.
Because of the opposing factions and the different tribes within our borders, our beloved Zimbabwe should be run as a business, for the betterment of all. Who else would you have in charge other than this financially-successful businessman? Please donât bother to answer that question because everyone in Zimbabwe wants to be a leader and a decision-maker yet few have proved they are capable.

Fair Dinkum Zimbo ⢠fairdinkum@election.co.zw Subject: Election 08 Wed, 06 Feb 2008 09:32:35 ⢠âSometimes I wonder if we shall ever grow up in our politics and say definite things which mean something, or whether we shall always go on using generalities to which everyone can subscribe, and which mean very little.â E Roosevelt, Former US President once said. I have been reading the forum submissions for some time now and note that a lot of times sentimentalism and high emotions which reflect the anxiety, anger, hopes and wishes of many a contributor and indeed the Zimbabwean populace clouds the depth of our discussions and contributions on the plethora of issues currently challenging us as a nation. As such politicians in Zim and Africa, both in office and those aspiring for office, are let loose on a lot of string on many issues and do not ever have to face the difficult questions about how they intend to solve problems dogging their people. More often than not these politicians and would be politicians will revert back to an election manifesto, which is full of promises without any realistic and honest target and means to get there. Manifestos are a good thing to have but they must really be the face of a solid set of policies that a prospective or a sitting administration uses in navigating the issues of governance. Viability and credibility is something that has been long lost by both leaders of the opposition and the leader of the sitting admin. Therefore the emergence of Simba on the scene a couple of months before the election, is a bit of a shock, given his past utterances a few weeks ago and the timing as has been noted by observers on both sides of the political divide, yet it is potentially the injection of credibility and viability of the political scene in Zim. Some have likened his coming to the stage to the Tekere and ZUM event almost a couple of decades ago. Speculations are rife as to his backing, his agenda and whether he is or is not a ZANU decoy to further confuse the voter. That is a fair and justified reaction from fair minded Zimbabweans given the timeframes and circumstances prevailing in the country at the moment I say Zimbabweans should demand a better way, LET US PUT MAKONI TO THE TEST, LET US TAKE HIME TO TASK ON REAL ISSUES affecting our people. Let us shun motive fist throwing as we did post independence when we repeatedly voted for the incumbent and let us shun the slogans and air slapping of 2000 and lets us present these politicians with questions and demand answers. Lets ask them what they intend to do with our tainted foreign relations, how they intend to put back the 80% of our unemployed back into jobs, let us ask how they intend to lead the nation to build the economy and wealth without compromising or bleeding the country to foreign interests ( whether those are eastern or western) while leaving their citizenry poor, lets ask and demand answers from Simba about the agrarian issues, Diaspora vote and anything else that you can think of. We want Simba to provide us the platform (be it these types of fora, internet, online newspapers, you tube, my space etc) to air these questions and he should convincingly answer us. We want him to tell us of post election governance issues, his plans and timeframes, the likely sources of his funding and how his relations will be managed , he has to pass the litmus test so that we can determine if our and dreams will be in safe hands and realized in our lifetime. In short it he has to provide us auditable policies and how they differ from the sitting presidentâs and WE, the Zimbabweans shall be the deciders of his suitability to lead us. This election let us refuse to be excited by well polished speeches written by spin doctors and let us listen to any campaign with our minds and not our emotions. Let us not leave any grey area unquestioned in the road to number 1 Borrowdale Rd. Ngatisarerai imbwa nemukaka wemavhoti edu yozofuma yotiruma mangwana ( and mangwana can be 27yrs after kuzvitonga kuzere in the case of those that have repeatedly put the current people in place) As it is early days, let us think of what kind of Zim we want and be ready to ask the how, when, what, why, who, where, with what questions to our dear Simba.

Thats what Mugabe and Tsvangirai have done to reach this far. makoni needs this at this point. Confidence. If he exhibits this for all to see he will succeed at least to have a following in case he fails to win (which is most likely to be the case anyway).
Let Zimbabweans debate on what they want Zimbabwe to be like. Lets not leave our fate to just a few individuals. Why Jonathan will remain the most evil Zimbabwean is that he denied us that opportunity when he was in government by pushing pieces of legislation that hurt the confidence of people to air what they think and leave opinion on important national issues to a few selected individuals who are now owners of means of production. We are now in a form of colonialism where people need to liberate themselves from. Thats the debate that Makoni needs to ignite within the masses and make them feel confident that their views arent wrong. ZANU PF will be selling empowerment. It knows that people want to stand on their own economically though I urge it to allow foreign capital investment and grantee property rights. The MDC also needs to tell us what it really stands for besides bringing change.
Thats a challenge.
