A lot happened which led this gallant son to break the waters for a re-birth in foreign land. There is this big temptation to slide down this rigmarole of who grabbed food from the very mouths of babies. And this food has to be sought another space and time. We will not dwell on that .It’s in the past.
Mukanya come back home now. I am back to my roots. Tich Mataz is back in the house. Norah Spie is contemplating her journey homewards.
One glaring truth is, all Zimbabweans in the diaspora will come back home, the difference is in the timing. For Mukanya the time is at hand.
At present the political animals from different divides are locked up in determinant efforts to turn our titanic away from that foreboding iceberg. They have seen the futility of spear brandishing, under foot bashing and bickering. For the first time in close to a decade’s descend we can now see the magnitude of our limitations.
And what a moment for Dr Mukanya to bounce back.
I would have preferred to start with my role for the Mukanya home-coming .For, ask not what Mukanya can do for you, but what you can do for Mukanya. Be that as it may, let me start with what Dr Mapfumo can do.
Let me bite your ear good Doc.Put your genius to job. Thomas Mapfumo should pen out a CD which epitomizes the current goings-on on the political arena. Telling it like it is, zvazviri. That there are no blow-backs on the path that Zim has embarked on. Congratulate the Chinamasas, Ncubes, Chamisas, Mutambaras, Tsvangirais and Mugabes for realising to put Zim first. Our country needs to transcend the politics of personalities and heal sooner than later.Zim is immortal, individuals will die soon.
I can’t be lecturing Dr Mapfumo on commentating politics. He has done that all his life. However what I want to alert him is that he must exclude his usual arrogance. We don’t need it NOW. Some great book taught me we are now living in a world where one should get their way through persuasion rather than ridicule or brute force. No-one is beyond persuasion. Where we seem to fail, we try, try and try again. To persuade. Let’s all grab the opportunity to persuade each other. And the art and skill of persuasion can only be led by visionaries like Dr Mapfumo.
Having said that, I can’t wait to hear Mukanya’s deep, booming vocals on our airwaves, urging us all to a new dispensation.
Mukanya, give us a happy 2008 gift.
I dare not say I will be the first to the H-town air terminal to welcome this deserving, gallant and living hero of our time. I will give it my best shot. You bet the rest of Zimbabwe will be there in time to capture the physical, emotional, social and historical significance of this occurrence.
Zim now boasts of tried and tested promoters at home and diasporally. What about a Mukanya home-coming Bira? We can combine forces and rally musicians, local and foreign, to welcome Dr Mukanya. To mind comes the King of Sungura, Alick Macheso, the superstar, Oliver Mutukudzi, the upcoming Roki, Baba naMai Charamba, Victor Kunonga, Dan Tshanda, Miriam Makeba, Isau Meneses, Anna Mwale, Mr Nice of Tanzania, and Kofi Olomide.Minus Vee of Taku Taku fame. Some one better from Bots please! That list to me looks like a SADC initiative by musicians.
Let’s convince these artists that we are whipping up support for a process that has eternal results not only for Zim but the region. Artists are business persons, yes, but we will persuade them towards the spirit of social responsibility. Who doesn’t want to make history after all?
A classy gig penciled for a spacious venue is befitting. Zimbabweans are a responsive people. They will fill up any space where there is peace.
I want to encourage the media and armchair critics to view such an initiative positively. Whilst politicians are playing their part, they need everyone’s support. Let’s make the on-going SADC intervention as irreversible as is possible .That requires swallowing of pride and going that extra mile.
A big snake does not bite self. Let’s give it a go for Dr Thomas Tafirenyika “Mukanya” Mapfumo.
Possible.
