DEAR EDITOR ─ I have been following the campaign trail for quite some time now and scrutinising all the presidential candidates. I should say that as we approach Saturday, when the crucial election will be held, the candidates are getting more and more desperate and it dawns on them that President Mugabe is going to win.
I have seen Makoni turning into a characters they blame Mugabe for being. He has started hailing insults at the President, yet he has blamed him in the past for hailing insults at them. Makoni dressed in his sheepskin at the start tried to present himself as holier thanthou and said he was not moved by negatives, but we have seen him recently hailing insults at President Mugabe calling him an old man who needed to go to Zvimba and retire. He labelled the Zanu PF leadership, ‘fools’ when he was addressing a rally in Marondera on Friday.
So what happened to the smooth-talking Makoni? Is he still not motivated by negatives?
We are also tired of Makoni’s promises. We heard that they would announce a big wig whop was supporting Makoni at the same Marondera rally, but that never materialised. That big wig was presumably Mujuru, or we were made to believe that it was Mujuru. Makoni is looking more and more defeated as each day passes and more like a fool by holding on to the claim that many people support him.
We couldn’t care less who supports him now. We have seen the hoch poch of characters who support him and they represent a confused and disgruntled bunch. I do not see how he can beat Tsvangirai or Mugabe at the ballot on Saturday.
I can see through Simba Makoni's strategy. He's trying to be like Mark Anthony in Julius Caesar where he convinces the crowd to fight against Brutus by lying to them that Brutus was honourable, kuruma achifuridzira. This trick will not work in Zimbabwe and Makoni will lose dismally at the election.
I am sure all his MPs will lose as well.
Simba can dream on while the rest of the people go on with their daily lives. I wonder what will become of him after March 29, another Edgar Tekere maybe or he could join the Mutambara MDC seeing they are looking for a new leader.

How i pray that all you fake asailum applications are denied and you are all deported back home before the 29th! .
Zim is your only home and you should be ashamed that you're wasting your efforts in afar lands trying to get visas renewed instead of wasting that energy on campaigning and voting for change for the sake of your children and children's children!
Zik • engineer_guru@hotmail.com Subject: RE: Mon, 24 Mar 2008 07:06:03 • I think your comment Mathew are really irrelevant to Zimbabwe politics at the moment as you probably don't understand the situation on the ground and rather than give a progressive opinion that has in itself a desire to change it focuses on the negative and and is very retrogressive. Simba Makoni has been bold in coming out and changing Zanu and president Mugabe in fact sacrificing much even putting his life at stake for a possible better future for you and your children just as much as morgan tsangirai has done in the past years. So rather than giving such negative comments from afar off in Ireland why not take the plane to Zim and and be a part of the change in Zim...
n/a • n/a Subject: Blame yourself if tehy lose Mon, 24 Mar 2008 04:21:55 • I will be happier Marumahoko,if your signature is just but a pseudonymn. Otherwise I would rather respect Makoni for his efforts than listen to someone who calls for change while in a far-away land.
So many people are discussing Makoni from the comfort of their foreign homes.
Wamurikuda kuti avhote for a change that will benefit everyone including yourselves ikoko ndiani?
Yes,Tsvangirai and Makoni will lose because there are no people to vote for them in the country. A leader can campaign and sing about change but if the people who share his views prefer to stay out of the country and not vote, then don't blame him if he loses.
Even without rigging, President Mugabe can still win. He could still win even when Makoni launched his project and attracted a lot of interest because Makoni's support was on the websites. His electorate wants him to win but won't come home and vote.
Who, among all diasporans can can say with all honesty that they have tried to come home to vote but failed? Some are as near as South Africa but still, they wont come home to vote. They want change, but who will champion that change for you if you choose to be a distant referee in the game?
