Tsvangirai should come out in the open

Philip Manatse ─ Opinion

Wed, 26 Mar 2008 00:00:00 +0000

DEAR EDITOR ─ RECENT utterances by MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai left me concerned about the post-election period in Zimbabwe. The MDC leader has asked MDC voters to stay at polling stations and defend their vote.

Does the MDC care to tell the people of Zimbabwe exactly what he means by this?

My understanding is that he is trying to involve Zimbabwean people, one, in election results counting and, two, incite them to be violent in contesting the results of the election, if any of the other candidates win, especially President Mugabe.

My understanding of this scenario is Tsvangirai is advocating violence if he does not win the election. How will the people of Zimbabwe defend their vote and for how long, and why, should they remain at the polling centres after casting their vote?

I am concerned by such misdirected statements from a leader of the opposition.

In contrast, Makoni has been calm and collected. This shows some maturity compared to Morgan's desperation. It looks like only an acceptable result for Tsvangirai is one in which the MDC wins. This is very disturbing and the police and army should make sure that Tsvangirai does not descend Zimbabwe into Kenya style riots.

We would be happy to get a reassurance from the over-confident Tsvangirai that Zimbabwe will remain peaceful if he loses this election and that he will spare us the election rigging mantra that he has now come to be known for.
