Let us fix our vision on peace

Edwin T Kamanda—Opinion

Sun, 11 May 2008 04:41:00 +0000

THE recent revelations by Kingsley Mamabolo, head of the Sadc election observer team for Zimbabwe, that the prevailing violence in the country is not conducive for a presidential run-off only serves to confirm the common assertion that Zimbabwe is currently a country at war with its own people.

As the world tries to come to grips with the appalling situation in the country, wise words of black American Baptist minister, campaigner for civil rights and Head of the Southern Conference could not come to mind at a better time. Martin Luther King said, “We must not wage a war.” He further asserts that it is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it.

Further reference is made to a fascinating little story from Greek Literature about Ulysses and the Sirens. According to this story, the Sirens were a people who could sing so sweetly that sailors could not resist steering towards their island. Many ships were lured upon the rocks, and men forgot home, duty and honour as they flung themselves into sea to be embraced by arms that drew them down to death.

Ulysses, determined not to be lured by the Sirens, first decided to tie himself tightly to the mast of his boat, and his crew stuffed their ears with wax. But finally he and his crew learned a better way to save themselves. They took on board the beautiful singer Orpheus whose melodies were sweeter than the music of the Sirens. When Orpheus sang, no one bothered listening to the Sirens.

So in the face of all what is happening in Zimbabwe, Zimbabweans should shun violence. We will not build a peaceful and prosperous country by following a negative path. In his quest for peace and justice Martin Luther King advocates the use of non violent means. He declared, “Non violence seeks to secure moral ends by moral means”. Somehow we must transform the current struggle into a positive contest which will harness man’s creative genius for the purpose of making peace and prosperity a reality for all Zimbabweans.

We must shift the current scenario into a ‘peace race’. Peace is not simply about prevention and absence of conflict. It is also about setting up and maintaining an environment conducive for the development of social, economic and political processes.

With enough faith, will and determination, we can mount a peace offensive which will unlock sealed doors of hope, change, democracy and prosperity.

• We can never go wrong if we allow progressive views in this article to guide conduct.

I wish people could stretch their imagination to the day they will be on the death bed and try to imagine what sort of legacy they want to leave on earth.

For me, I would rather have an epitaph on my grave written: Here is a coward who never even raised his hand to fight anybody but who helped other Zimbabweans to be a better place to live.

Thanks Edwin.

• EDWIN KAMANDA! EDWIN KAMANDA!
Remember that name guys - this man is special. He is precious. He shares a vision that we all share.
Bless you shamwari.

And everyone else? Just stop antagonising one another, either verbally or physically. Please. That is the first step towards peace. It is just not conducive to PEACE. Remember LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR?

Maybe some Editors on other sites should set the pace and play their part in refusing to publish any outright abuse which is rude and not quite what Zimbabwe's good manners are all about, eh?

Do we have a PERSON OF PEACE AWARD in Zimbabwe yet? I hereby propose that Edwin is the first to get this Award. On line, here and now.
Will anyone second that?

• Edwin yours is the first MDC opinion that I have read and I embrace. Totally. thank you for this valuable input. Are there anymore MDC out there with such a positive outlook? I do hope so.

All anyone from your side ever says to us sounds like Get uMugabe off because MT should be centre stage! Imagine if Zanu folk said We will negotiate with MDC on a GNU but only if you get rid of MT! How would you guys feel to have your leader used as a pawn in this manner?

uMugabe is our Ulysses and he has been strapped to that mast it seems forever. (I love your illustration here.) Both our leaders epitomise what we stand for 50/50. Well almost, with Makoni coming up on the inside.

We have been the WB/IMF route and it ended up in a ransom situation with our necks in a noose whereas the G7 let other countries off the hook!

We ALL want peace, or there will be nothing for any of us to go home to otherwise.. I agree with you totally because it can begin immediately if everyone stops this mudslinging and begins to respect one another - as Zimbabweans first.

There is no guarantee that a runoff is not going to bring PEACE because unless our leaders are going to sit down with their respective lieuts and generals, with Mbeki and Makoni to referee, we wont get PEACE, and whatsmore, they must be locked up together until they DO get somewhere. I say Makoni should also refereee because he is neither Zanu or MDC, he has been in a responsible ministerial position, he is a Zimbabwean and he knows what we all want.

Thank you Edwin. I think I like you already!
