DEAR EDITOR – The mixed stories coming out of the talks are now a cause for concern.
The Movement for Democratic Change party says discussions are underway on all the ministries (MDC Secretary General, Tendai Biti), 10 ministries (MDC Spokesman, Nelson Chamisa) and a few ministries (MDC Deputy President, Thokozani Khupe).
We have heard the Justice Minister, Patrick Chinamasa saying the only contentious ministry outstanding is that of Home Affairs.
Early Tuesday morning, the Secretary General of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Tomaz Salamao told a news conference that the only issue tabled and discussed pertained to the control of the Home Affairs ministry.
For the sake of informing the public, could someone please tell us whether the Secretary General of Sadc is not telling the truth. The MDC said that Justice Minister, Patrick Chinamasa was not telling the truth when he said only one ministry was left to be allocated.
Now that the Executive Secretary of Sadc has said the same thing, shall we conclude that only the MDC is telling the truth and everyone else is not? Why is it that the other MDC formation, led by Arthur Mutambara, told Voice of America radio that the negotiators are down to only one ministry? Could he be not telling the truth as well?
Biti issued a statement on Tuesday saying the two unity documents, one signed on September 11, 2008 and another formally signed on September 15, 2008 were very different from each other. Nelson Chamisa said the two documents only had typographical errors - a statement corroborated by party President, Morgan Tsvangirai. Salamao said there was no problem in the amendment of the typographical issues and that there "was consensus here". This issue was underwritten in the Sadc Communique issued.
Why is it that the party President and Secretary General are speaking with different voices?
Is Tendai Biti playing politics with the issues at hand to satisfy his political ambitions by rejecting a Sadc Communique which the other MDC faction agreed with?
We deserve to know the truth.

Given the gravity of the situation in Zim, how can the issue of an ETD be used as an excuse not to attend an important meeting. Why is the MDC-T only interested in internationalising a domestic issue? Please MDC-T, do us a favour, we are tired of your whining in the Western press. We have a credit crunch here and have more on our plates than reading about western proxies who are only doing the bidding for their masters and using the Zim electorate for their own selfish ends. MDC-T is going to be history soon judging by the mood of the Zim electorate.Zims wants food on their tables and not blo---ETDs or Home Affairs ministry.
Dzvinyangoma • n/a Subject: MDC-T is not serious Wed, 29 Oct 2008 10:46:16 • It seems MDC-T is determined to see this agreement fail using the passport issue as an excuse. Now Biti is quoted as saying MDC-T will not attend the full SADC summit that they have been calling for if Tsvangirai is travelling on an ETD. How many Zimbabweans are travelling on ETDs?
It would appear the MDC leadership has not yet appreciated the gravity of the situation the country is in as they are cushioned by the funding they get from western countries. It seems that they made sure that the SADC summit held on Monday failed in the hope that a full summit would be called outside Zim for them to demand a passport for Tsvangirai.
Call me cynical but it seems to the MDC-T a passport for Tsvangirai is more important than creating the conditions that would enable all Zimbabweans to get a proper passport instead of ETDs. They acknowledged the existence of sanctions against Zim in the 15 Sept agreement but they do not want to accept the realities of the effects. This is the same party which refuses to denounce the sanctions.
What is sad about it is, MDC-T is quick to go to the western press to criticise Zanu PF for insincerity when it appears they are the ones being insincere. It gets worse when Biti, Chamisa and Tsvangirai give conflicting statements on the status of the talks.
