Zapu revival, a headache for the MDC

DEAR EDITOR – The breakaway faction of PF Zapu presents a dilemma, not for Zanu PF, but for the Movement for Democratic Change party who have won elections in Matabeleland since 2000.
The MDC should realize that their reign in Matabeleland is coming to an end if this faction ever regroups and is strong enough to make a mark.
PF Zapu and Zanu PF share the same roots and concerns. They might have their disagreements, but the history of the struggle for Zimbabwe binds them. Their ideologies are also not very different, that’s why they have been able to work in harmony for the last 21 years.
In any case the two parties are now inseparable. Their structures have been cemented over the two decades the Unity Accord has existed. They were never separated by regionalism or tribalism as many people would like us to believe.
The late Dr Joshua Nkomo even testified to this in an BBC interview with Jeremy Paxman in 1983.
These two parties have a solid history and respect the national question before any other question. They both despise imperialism and neo-colonialism and can never be subservient to Western interests.
Those people in the media fraternity who are trying to score points by overplaying the divisions within the united Zanu PF should consider the elements involved in the “resuscitation” of PF Zapu.
Zapu has never completely died. There has always been a faction of Zapu alive somewhere and this renewed effort is backed by individuals who are not in the mainstream unity agreement of 1987.
Paul Siwela’s super-Zapu has existed for a long time, but it never threatened the 1987 Unity Accord.
Dumiso Dabengwa will be a lone figure should this latest antic of his fails to take off. I do not see how it will take off. Former PF Zapu elements currently in Zanu PF would be out of their minds to walk away after 21 years.
After failing to score any successes with Dr Simba Makoni, Dabengwa’s desperation is now showing and is clouding his better judgment. What exactly will he be benefiting from the revival of PF Zapu, except to make a symbolic political gesture?
PF Zapu elements pushing for the revival of the party are no major threat to the 1987 Unity Accord. They have been in the political wilderness for a long time.
People like Welshman Mabhena (former Zapu secretary general), former war veterans’ leader Andrew Ndlovu, former government minister Thenjiwe Lesabe, Effort Nkomo and Tryphine Nhliziyo are not individuals that could threaten the 1987 agreement. They are all desperate for relevance in Zimbabwean politics.
If they ever become big, which I doubt very much, they will only threaten Tsvangirai’s dominance in Matabeleland, but can never threaten the united Zanu PF, if truth is to be told.

It makes sense for both parties to maintain their unity. Just as the same argument has been made for the re-unification of MDC-T and MDC-M.
Remember both Zipra (Zapu) and Zanla (Zanu) forces were all part of the liberation struggle to free Zim from the colonial york. Mbuso's point is that given the track record of those who are advocating the re-emergence of Zapu, he feels this is a non starter. As for your question why Zanu-PF is not encouraging the formation of a splinter group (Zapu),why should it given the ideological similarity between the two. However, a resurrection of Zapu in Matebeleland will have dire consequences for MDC-T.As you and I know, MDC-T constituency is in Matebeleland and in urban areas. If one takes out the Matebeleland vote out of MDC-T equation, then MDC-T will definitely decline as a party. One does not need a Phd in political science to understand that MDC-T does not have the support of voters in rural areas where the war of liberation was fought and this constituency make up the majority of voters.
The lack of any ideology on the part of MDC-T has also alienated many voters. Some people find it very difficult to vote for party like MDC-T that is supported by that infamous Selous Scout, Roy Bennett and other Rhodies like David Coultart, Eddie Cross etc. Many rural prople were brutalised by the actions of Roy Bennett and his Selous Scouts etc. These people might have forgiven but have not forgotten.

You didnt even bother to tackle my question and went off on a tangent. You shud read and understand first before you shoot your mouth not addressing whats been asked. I ask again, if Makahamadze thinks that it's a blessing for ZANU PF if ZAPU reformed, why is it at pains to stop the reformation after all they would want to reduce the MDC support at al costs. Weall know ZAPU would not beat ZANU PF for support.
Hamadziripi Simbaneuta • tedhama@yahoo.co.uk Subject: Zanu /Zapu I a sorry to say they no longer fuction Wed, 19 Nov 2008 12:46:12 • I have a lot of symphath to Zapu but at this current situation I don't think their revival we do any impact to the political crisis we have. The only thing it will show is the dying of Zanu Pf.Most key leaders of Zapu were heavly involved in the Zanu Government and were also benefeted a lot from it.
Looking on March 29 election's results they are showing that Zimbabweans have moved from being used by politicians on tribal grounds. There is still a lot to go through but this current generation have now started to show a good way forward.
The good part will be that they will start to blame each other Zanu/Zapu and the they will spill the beans which will make the collapse of entire Zanu.
I don't think MDC will be worried but grabbers will be.
Wish them good luck!!!
Nxumalo Mbuso • nmbuso@gmail.com Subject: ZAPU Wed, 19 Nov 2008 05:39:43 • Nana, Let us the people of Matabeleland speak out. ZAPU has been in existence ever since despite the unity Accord. But let me hasten to say we know what is good for the region. MDC might be getting the support here but we know what is good for ZIM. This has been a protest vote to make sure the Govt takes steps to deal with projects that have been static for a good number of years.
Those who know Andrew Ndlovu's history will not take him so seriously. I don't have to go at length about that here but its a big joke to think he can lead ZAPU and expect us to follow him. Mabhena has been part of ZANU pf in govt and he can not come and tell us anything about development. So many things happened when he was Minister. He never supervised anything during his time and he is doing this as a bitter man following his axing for not performing.
The problem with people like you nana@na.com is you think Matabeleland is a place of people who don't think. Manicaland is one place with very power hungry people. I would like to hear a comment from you on parties formed as breakaways from Zanu pf.
We want unity in our region and the whole of Zimbabwe. We know what lake of unity can bring, we have been through it and we know it. Read Ndlovu's history and see if he is a right person for the people of this region.uNkomo wethu somlandela...........
